Marinating by pricking

The "French's" brand name, which is owned by ReckittBenckiser, is marketing a marinade for meat in the USA with the endorsement "Flavor Infuser"; the product is packed in a 103ml content tube and incorporates an application nozzle. The directly printed, headstand tube with a transparent safety cap is fitted with a tip that injects the marinade (featuring the "Classic Steakhouse" flavour) into the meat by first pricking and then pressing on the tube. The marinade takes 10min to penetrate, after which the meat is ready for further preparation. Before using the tip needs to be unscrewed and a sealing membrane removed.

Do-it-yourself barbecue meat marinade

Under the slogan "Bag it. Zip It. Grill It.", Heinz North America is selling a 340g marinade with the flavour of Jack Daniel's in a re-sealable plastic pouch that acts at the same time as a container for marinating the (separately purchased) meat. After partial removal of the top the pouch can take up to 1.5kg of barbecue meat. The pouch is re-sealed using a zip closure to enable the marinade to be absorbed. The meat is then removed, barbecued and the pouch disposed of.

Re-seal facility for fresh herbs

The Florette Group from France, specialists in vegetables and fresh, ready-to-use salads, is marketing 11g of fresh, washed herbs in France in a re-sealable pack made up of a dish to hold the product and a tubular bag. Lines of weakness are integrated in the top of the foil and these are protected by means of an overlapping self-adhesive label and an opening to enable the product to be removed. Pressing the label against the film reseals the package.

Ketchup in a pouch

Heinz has recently also been marketing its well-known ketchup on the American market in a pouch with a stand-up base and a content of 283g. The pouch features a re-sealable welded pourer and is instantly recognisable as a Heinz product. By comparison to the well-known squeezy bottle, the pouch offers advantages not only in terms of manufacture but also in terms of materials consumption and logistics.

Double pouch for nuts

"Maître Prunille", the French specialist in dried fruit and nuts, is selling 2 x 62.5g of shelled nuts in a double pouch. There is a perforated section which enables easy separation of the pouches. Both pouches have lateral, specially marked notches that enable them to be opened without a special tool.

Cheese in a double pack

If a package for cheese is designed so that the content cannot be consumed all at once, there is the risk that the cheese may lose its taste and dry out. One solution to this problem is double packs for Epi-cheese from Fromageries Perault. 2 x 60g of cheese are packed in a tray with two recesses and a top film shared by both sections. The trays can be easily separated from one another and can be opened separately.

Pouches for refilling

The German company Frosch is offering a special refill pack for its "Oasis" room freshener. A transparent refill sachet with a detachable pouring spout and six sticks are combined to form a single sales unit by means of natural-look cardboard packaging. The sticks connect with the outside via an opening in a way that has advertising appeal and the sachet can be glimpsed via a window on the front, printed to correspond with the respective fragrance. The necessary consumer information is printed on the rear of the box.

Chicken stock in the pouch

A kilogram of soluble chicken stock is being marketed by Maggi in the USA in a stand-up pouch. The pouch features a zip closure at the top to enable rapid and straightforward sealing. Prior to initial opening, a strip on the top of the pouch (marked by notches) needs to be detached.

Croutons in the pouch

Safeway has ready to eat prepared croutons in its range for quickly adding that finishing touch to customers' own salads and soups. 142g of the croutons, with added herbs, are packed in a stand-up pouch with a zip re-seal facility and Euro-perforations to enable the pack to be suspended for presentation at the PoS. In order to access the product, a strip on the top of the pouch must first of all be detached.

Concentrated flavour

Consumers in the USA are fond of enhancing the intensity of flavour of their drinks and/or of creating drinks themselves by mixing water with flavouring substances. The concentrated flavouring substances which, according to the packaging, contain 0% juice, are packed into small, handy plastic bottles that can also be readily stowed away in the pocket or handbag. The bottles containing volumes of around the 50ml mark can be re-sealed by means of a hinged lid and are safeguarded against tampering by means of a detachable sleeve label.

Cocktails out of the pouch

Following the trend towards convenience, in USA supermarkets there is a wide range of ready-mix cocktails to be found. The pouches, in various shapes and mostly with a content of 10oz (296ml), are filled with all the ingredients needed to make a cocktail. Preparation is extremely simple; put the pouch in the freezer compartment for approximately six hours, then knead, hold under hot water for a short time, open the pouch and enjoy the still half-frozen end product direct from the bag or decant into a glass.

Harnessing lemon power

Unilever are marketing their new water-soluble, gel-filled dishwasher liquid tablets in a stand-up, re-sealable pouch pack. The 22 "Sun" brand tablets, filled with yellow gel, additionally make use of the cleaning power of lemon and are said to thus achieve a greater grease dissolving effect. This also prevents any grease deposits from building up in the machine. The pouch which holds the tablets is of stable construction and can be easily re-sealed so as to protect the tablets against moisture. Prior to removing the product, one segment of the pouch needs to be removed using a pair of scissors.
