DuPont Surlyn thermoplastic resins are widely recognised as the tough plastic in golf balls. But their strength is not limited to that application. Other moulded goods in this sodium ionomer resin take advantage of the material’s transparency, safety and lightweight characteristics. Latest example is for packaging beauty care, the cap of a cupcake-shaped perfume by the Brazilian brand L’acqua di Fiori.
DuPont Surlyn, a resin used in caps and bottles for market-leading cosmetic brands, was the material chosen by L’acqua di Fiori for the cover of its new collection. The packaging creation was planned by L’acqua di Fiori marketing team and Abner Brito, the company’s designer. To stick to the traditional American cupcake image, the designer has chosen a standard glass bottle decorated with two ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) layers and closed by lightweight but impact tough a red cherry-shaped perfume cap.
The red cherry-shaped cap creation has used Surlyn, a resin that has several applications in the cosmetic industry, primarily in caps for perfumes or pots. The resin was said to be ideal for the composition of the rounded-shaped caps symbolising the cherry since the brand’s main purpose is adherence to the fragrance and the original cupcake packaging. “The material was chosen by L’acqua di Fiori packing development team because of the brightness, charm, toughness and safety requirements in the initial packaging planning,” explained Janine Carvalho, Sales Representative of Polymers for Packaging and Consumer Products division at DuPont Brazil.
The Cupcake Me line is intended to represent the sweet side of life and has two fragrances: Napolitano Chic and Caramelo Divertido. Inspired by traditional American cupcakes, the perfumery has launched the Cupcake Me line for “tween” consumers.
