The German company Jelu has developed a fully compostable wood plastic composite (WPC) made from polylactides (PLA) and wood fibres. It can be recycled in composting plants and is suitable for injection moulding and extrusion on conventional plastics processing machines.
In its basic blend, the compound contains 40% PLA and 60% wood fibres. As the material is available in granulate form, it provides consistent running properties on the machine and allows to produce very homogeneous end products. Only fibres from selected woods with defined properties, such as having a fixed grain size and being of the same type of wood, are used. By adding additives, the properties can be adjusted to individual requirements. The biocomposites fulfill the German standards for use in food and toys.
