Putting steel in the shade: PEEK valve plates last 12x longer
Victrex showcased the performance of their polyaryletherketones (PAEK) product portfolio across a broad temperature range. Victrex PEEK 90HMF40, which was recently accredited by Airbus, is said to permit weight savings of up to 40% compared to aluminium. The polymer is claimed to be characterised by up to 100 times longer fatigue strength and up to 20% higher specific strength and stiffness as compared with aluminium 7075-T6 used in the aerospace industry under the same conditions.
In automotive construction, components made of Victrex WG polymers with optimised slip/friction properties are intended to extend the service life and raise the efficiency of components, including electric pumps, for example. As compared to other high-performance plastics, the friction coefficient with Victrex polymers is lower, depending on the requirement profile, and remains stable over the life of the product, according to the company.

Milliken: Clarifying, nucleating and reinforcing agents
Milliken will showcase its new additive solutions, among those are Millad NX 8000 and NX 8500E clarifying agents for PP, Hyperform HPN 68L, HPN-20E and HPN-600ei nucleating agents for PP, Hyperform HPN-20E nucleating agent for PE and Hyperform HPR-803i reinforcing agent.
Clarifying agent Millad NX 8000 is said to enable PP parts to be made with optical properties hitherto only associated with more glass-like polymers such as polycarbonate, crystal polystyrene and acrylics. Millad NX 8500E is a variant of NX 8000 that has been fine-tuned for extrusion-blow moulding (EBM) PP applications. Use of Millad NX 8500E can simplify production of multilayer bottles, for example, since the same grade of PP can now be used for the outer layer and for the inner layer, says Milliken. The special formulation of Millad NX 8500E can help to improve gloss on the inside and outside of bottles. This is an important feature for products such as bottles for shampoos and detergents, where brand owners strive to have their products stand out on the shelves.
Milliken’s synthetic reinforcing agent Hyperform HPR-803i is said to allow automotive designers to create parts that are up to 15% lighter without compromising performance. Hyperform HPR-803i is added at a lower addition rate than mineral fillers to PP compounds, so the compounds have a lower density. Used alone or with talc, it is said to help automakers meet weight reduction targets and produce cars with reduced fuel consumption and lower vehicle emission.
Compounds containing Hyperform HPR-803i can be processed on existing conventional injection moulding equipment, without processors having to make additional investments.

Addex: Capabilities for automatic gauge control
Addex, a leading global supplier of blown film equipment and components, will exhibit both its air ring-based (EGC) system for blown film extrusion lines, which is said to deliver great flexibility for processors, enabling easy retrofits of existing or new systems in order to provide reduced thickness variation, increased yields and raw material savings. The company will also present its IBC-based (IGC) system and Digital Internal Bubble Cooling (DIBC) system which delivers the fastest reaction time in the industry to ensure precise bubble control, helping processors to speed product changeovers and significantly reduce scrap. Another key highlight will be Addex’s well-established Manual Gauge Control (MGC), based on the company’s Dual Lip Air Ring, which is said to permit selective adjustment to correct film gauge deviation caused by extruder, die, or ambient anomalies by as much as 25%.

PVC-O pipes up to 800mm are possible

Oriented PVC material is stronger and tougher than PVC-U and provides better overall performance. It has approximately twice the strength and ten times more impact resistance than PVC-U. But technical limitations and poor efficiency in their manufacturing process has been an obstacle to mass production and the use of PVC-O pipes in general. However, these limitations have been overcome with the employment of the new air process of molecular orientation developed by Molecor which now enables pressure pipes to be produced up to DN 800mm (30").
