Plastrac has launched a new line of space-and-time-saving cart-based blending systems to make additive and other changes simple and fast. The carts can be rolled and set up quickly. Several of the new models are on display at the #NPE2015.

Duplex and fully independent dual models

Plastrac has been supplying custom single cart systems for several years and recently standardized them. The new cart systems at NPE are duplex and fully independent dual models, believed to be exclusive in the industry. The duplex dual is based on the value proposition of a single virgin feeder and two different color feeders with shared controller and blower system, typically operating independently with either manual color filling or an automated color loader. The fully independent dual system uniquely allows two different resins for double-shot machines (for applications like toothbrushes that integrate a hard plastic with a soft LSR grip). Separate hoppers on the carts facilitate easy color changes. For instance, a full dual will accommodate two natural resins, up to two additives, with a shared blower system and a control box that can manage up to six disc feeders. Operators are able to switch colors electronically.

Blenders support Just-In-Time manufacturing practices

According to Ken Bullivant, President of Plastrac, “In recent years, calling on customers, on their shop floors, week-in and week-out, it became apparent to us that there was a need for quick changeovers and simple set-ups on short runs and to support Just In Time manufacturing practices. So, we designed our new cart systems for easy transport, quick access, and trouble-free blending shared between adjacent or close proximity machines. Our cart systems simplify so many aspects of blending and enable capabilities unavailable from single blend cart-based weigh batch systems, notably reducing scrap as high as 30% down to near zero.”

Plastrac's new family of cart-based blending systems was introduced at the 2015 National Plastics Exposition. Pictured with one of the new dual models is Ken Bullivant, Founder and President of Plastrac.

Unique blend funnel for blending extremely small percentage of additives

Certain features are standard on every Plastrac cart system. For instance, a unique blend funnel that optimizes blending even with extremely small percentage additives. It feeds into a slideout stainless steel catch hopper below the cart whose design ensures trouble-free blending of multiple streams of gravity fed pellets or micro pellets and any additives, as well as quick access and easy cleaning. Every feed hopper above the cart has an ultrasonic non-contact wireless level sensor with auto shutoff to ensure resin and additive supplies are easy to keep filled. All parts of the system are easy to connect and disconnect for fast changeovers and setups.
