“Green” polyketone to challenge engineering plastics

The world’s first mass-production facility of Hyosung Polyketone with 50,000MT/year capacity is currently under construction and scheduled to come on stream in June 2015. The plant is located in South Korea. Here a new kind of thermoplastic polymer is made. The so-called Hyosung Polyketone features a highly compact crystal structure and is made of carbon monoxide for up to 50% of the polymer weight.

Special balance of properties

In addition to its environmentally-friendly characteristic, the material combines a range of special properties: high resilience and strength, very good chemical and wear resistance, hydrolysis resistance and flame retardancy. The special balance of these properties is positioning the material between engineering plastics and super engineering plastics.

Elongation at yield over 20%, at break over 250%

High resilience with very good mechanical strength is one of the interesting properties. Elongation at yield is over 20% and elongation at break over 250%, while its tensile strength is at the same level of conditioned PA66 and its impact strength about twice higher than that of PA66 or PBT.

Chemical resistance to automotive fluids

Chemical resistance to automotive fluids, hydrocarbon solvents, salts, weak acids and bases, makes the material suitable for the use in automotive components and parts exposed to various chemicals. In addition, its natural grade shows about 10 times higher wear properties than POM. It can replace, for example, modified POM grades with even additional noise reducing values especially.
And the material shows higher hydrocarbon barrier properties than PA11 or PA12 and a similar gas barrier property to EVOH.

Applications:

The range of application includes automotive, electrical, electronics, and various other industrial uses. Combining its tribological property and chemical resistance, conveyor system components are another possible application. The combination of chemical resistance and barrier properties enables the material to be used in automotive fuel lines and in the packaging industry.
